We need diverse books! That’s just plain true. Our families are mixed and our friendships are too. The more we see ‘others’ in our stories and pictures, the more open we are to each other. Often we read about animals we all can identify with. This list features books with illustrated children who come from a variety of backgrounds being, well, children.
Below is a list of books that I like. For even more recommendations check out https://diversebooks.org/
Selina Alko – I’m Your Peanut Butter Big Brother
A little peanut-butter hued boy thinks about what his baby sibling will look like.
Pat Cummings – My Aunt Came Back
The aunt brings her adored niece gifts from exotic travels.
Leo and Diane Dillon – If Kids Ran the World
All children on these roads act with kindness.
Taro Gomi – I Know Numbers
Although probably for older children, how many of our babies learn to count before they are 2? And who can resist any of this brilliant artist’s work?!
Bob Graham – Oscar’s ½ Birthday
A picnic celebrating this baby is totally adorable.
Susan Meyers/Marla Frazee – Everywhere Babies
I’ll bet you’ll see your family in these pages.
John Steptoe – Baby Says
If you could see how your 2 sons interact without you, you’ll see how the baby wants the big boy’s things, and attention.
Vera Williams – More More More, Said The Baby
These are 3 Love Stories for 3 loved babies. Just get it!
